Assessment Task Detail and Instructions:
Analysing US Demand Shocks and Industrial Production in Export-Oriented Asian Economies
This assessment is designed to challenge your analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills. You will use a dataset exploring the relationship between US demand conditions and industrial production in export-oriented Asian economies.
Your task is to answer two key questions:
- To what degree do external demand shocks originating in the United States affect industrial production in Asian economies?
- Does the country’s level of trade dependency play a significant role in this relationship?
Group Presentation (30%)
Deliverable: A PowerPoint presentation (20 minutes), delivered in teams of 3 to 4 students
Objective: Visualise and summarise your key findings from the data analysis.
Submission Deadline: Submit your PowerPoint slides by 21st of March, 2026 2pm.
Your presentation should include:
- Introduction:Briefly describe the dataset, its variables, and the study’s objectives.
- Data Exploration:Present key descriptive statistics, data visualisations, and comparisons of measures of central tendency (e.g., mean, median, mode).
- Findings from Hypotheses Testing:Clearly state your hypotheses, describe the approach used to test them, and summarise your results.
- Correlation and Regression Analysis: Summarise insights from simple correlation analysis and multiple regression models. Explain why you chose specific variables and regression specifications.
- Conclusion: Highlight the main takeaways.
Note: Your presentation should be clear, visually engaging, and well-structured for an audience without a deep statistical background.

- Python Usage:All data cleaning, visualisation, and analysis must be conducted using Python.
- Clarity and Organisation:Use concise language, logical structure, and appropriate formatting. Ensure figures and tables are labelled and discussed.
- Evidence-Based Decisions: Explain and justify every methodological choice made during the analysis.
- Academic Integrity: All submissions must be your own work and properly cite any external sources used.
Assessment Marking Criteria / Scheme:
- Clarity and Engagement (30%):Assess how effectively the group communicates their analysis and findings, including the clarity of explanations, ability to engage the audience, and overall presentation style.
- Quality of Visualisations (30%):Evaluate the design, appropriateness, and effectiveness of the visual aids in conveying key insights, including their alignment with the research questions.
- Depth and Relevance of Analysis (30%):Judge the rigour and accuracy of the analysis, focusing on whether the findings directly address the research questions and demonstrate sound methodology.
- Organisation and Coherence (10%):Review the structure and logical flow of the presentation, including how well the sections connect and support the narrative of the analysis.
