Directions
Now that we have discussed the basic parts of the Toulmin model (claim, warrant, data), I want you to apply what you have learned by completing the following assignment:
- Step 1: Find a newspaper/magazine article or an advertisement that makes an argument. Some of the most useful articles are from the Editorial/Opinion pages because they are usually clear about the writer’s argument.
- Step 2: Underline a claim, warrant (if it states one), and data in the article. If you decide to use an advertisement, you will have to be more creative with your interpretation of the argument. Please circle the sections of the ad that you believe are driving the arguments.
- Step 3: Create a diagram of the claim, warrant, and data that looks like the example below.
Data (Evidence) _______________________________________
(What facts, statistics, or examples support the claim?)
Claim _______________________________________
(What is the main point/argument being made?)
Warrant _______________________________________
(Why does the data support the claim? What assumption connects them?)
