I need an art documentary review done, choose 2 or 3 videos from the YouTube videos link below or the movie mentioned in the prompt.
Assignment Instructions
[Instructor Note: Use this space to provide specific guidelines for students to follow. Please see the sample below.]
Follow the directions below to complete the activity:
STEP 1 | [WATCH A DOCUMENTARY, OR WATCH SEVERAL!]
Watch any one of the linked youtube videos or, preferably, watch Obeygiant on HULU. Enjoy! If you pic a youtube video that is less than 30 minutes watch two or three short ones like that before writing your response.
STEP 2 | [ENJOY IT!]
It may be something you already know about, it may be knew to you. Be open to it.
Prompts to consider when watching:
1) Does it remind you of anything you’ve seen before, what, where, how etc.
2) What artists get name checked in the documentary. Are the artists peers or contemporaries of the main character or are the artists name checked from earlier periods in art history and influences or motivators of the main character
3) There are multiple levels on which this art may be illegal, property damage, trespassing, copywrite infringement. Think about each illegality, especially appropriation and copywrite infringement and have an opinion on the illegalities
4) How does free speech play intersect with street art?
5) Some Reddit users “hate” Shepard Fairey and think he is a “sell-out” What does it mean to YOU to be a “sell-out”? What does it mean to be authentic? I have a friend who does graffiti (not street art specifically). He says doing tags on canvas or wood to present them as sellable art work isn’t the same as tagging a train, that the risk and adrenaline is part of the art process. I disagree, and I want him to just make product. What is your opinion on “Street art”, “Adrenaline as an art making component”, and “selling out”? A lot of artists in different art styles, catch negative criticism when they get “famous”, sometimes “haters gonna hate”.
6) If you make art, draw me a sticker or logo design, be inspired by the phrase “Jeff State Art Dept has a posse”
STEP 3 | SUBMIT YOUR WORK
Once you have completed the activity, follow the directions below to submit your assignment.
- Write a 1 page paper about your experience. This should be written like a journal or diary entry. First person is an appropriate way to write a reaction. Describe certain works of art that really stood out in either a positive or a negative way, but either way, expand and tell me WHAT you liked or didn’t like about the particular pieces. Do not worry about grammar, but PLEASE use paragraph breaks every 2-5 lines or sentences.
