The instructor wants to know what you may have learned, in summary, from the COMM 105 course and how it may be applied as you progress in your career. Please take a few minutes and provide your thoughts and responses to each one of the following questions.

1) How would you evaluate the information provided in the chapters? Which chapter(s) was the most useful or meaningful to you as you studied the course material?

2) Was the progression of the topics and concepts in the chapters and in the coursework useful in helping to comprehend and apply them in the assignments? Please explain.

3) As a result of taking this course, do you feel more capable and comfortable in speaking or making a presentation to an audience?

4) Assume that you have been invited to give a big speech on an important occasion. As part of this and from what you have learned in this course, provide your thoughts in a sentence or two on the importance of each of the following topics/activities as they would relate to this speech. This can be presented in a narrative, outline, summary points, etc. (you decide). The main requirement is for you to express your thoughts on how to incorporate these items when you are asked to give a speech next time in your academic or professional career:

  • Preparation
  • Interest in / knowledge of topic
  • Analysis / knowledge of audience
  • Ethics
  • Outline preparation
  • Introduction
  • Conclusion —
  • Support materials (definitions, testimony, statistics, and illustrations) —
  • Overcoming CA (Communicative Apprehension)
  • Speak extemporaneously
  • Presentation aids
  • Enthusiasm / passion about topic

For the last two questions, you can list your answers and these do not have to be in a narrative or report format. Words or phrases are fine.

5) What are five items that you have learned in this course that will make you a better speaker?

Here are some examples:

  • Advance preparation is very important.
  • Wording on a slide must be concise.
  • Speakers must be ethical in preparing and delivering their speeches.
  • Etc.

6) Going forward, what are five items that you will focus on in speech preparation and delivery as you continue/complete your college work and advance in your career?

Here are some examples:

  • I will prepare my introduction in such a way as to get the audience’s attention.
  • I want my conclusion to have a residual effect (this is what an audience will most likely remember).
  • The use of concrete words is preferable over generic words — I know it is best to use words that will “paint a picture” with the audience.
  • Etc.

Please submit your responses to these questions to the Assignment tab by Thursday (Day 4) 11:59 p.m.
