The technology benefits the platforms themselves because increased engagement leads to higher profits and growth. Users may also benefit from personalized content and entertainment.
However, people may also be harmed if they are exposed to misinformation, manipulation, or harmful online environments, which can lead to negative consequences such as decreased mental health, erosion of trust in information sources, and potential societal division. This issue is both legal and ethical. Legally, governments must decide how much responsibility platforms should have for the content they distribute. Businesses need to consider whether it is morally acceptable to prioritize profit over the public’s welfare. Different stakeholders may see the issue very differently. Technology companies may view the algorithm as a necessary business tool. Governments may see it as a regulatory challenge. Users may value convenience and entertainment but worry about misinformation, particularly regarding how it can affect their decision-making and trust in online content, especially when it comes to critical issues such as health, politics, and social justice. Because of these different perspectives, resolving the dilemma becomes complex and controversial, as it requires balancing the need for regulation with the users’ desire for convenience and the potential risks of misinformation.
