Good Morning/Evening Students; This project is based on communication with patients and healthcare professionals.

Objective:

  • Evaluate an outpatient prescription for completeness.
  • Develop the proper technique for gathering needed information from the patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to defuse difficult situations with anxious and upset patients and healthcare professionals
  • List ways to accommodate special-needs patients.
  • Assess the urgency of orders and prioritize work.

Directions:

Effective communication skills enhance the professionalism of the technician, creating, a feeling, of trust and mutual respect with patients and other healthcare professionals. Appropriate interview techniques will put the patient at ease as they are asked for personal health information. Answer the following questions accurately.

  1. List the information that must be on each prescription.
  2. If the strength of a multiple-strength drug is omitted from the prescription, describe the action you would take as a technician.
  3. The patient does not speak your language(s). What are some possible ways to gather needed information?
  4. When preparing prescriptions for a patient with limited vision, what are some things you can do to help differentiate between his medications?
  5. Describe ways to communicate with a patient who is hearing impaired.
  6. Discuss some methods for communicating with angry or upset patients or healthcare professionals to defuse the situation.
  7. List rules for refilling prescriptions for controlled substances
