CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESEARCH METHODS!
Disc. #4
Greetings Class,
For this discussion post, you will need to have read and reviewed chapter 7 of the textbook and then respond to the prompt. Remember, the learning objectives for the current chapter are as follows:
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Identify the circumstances that make survey research an appropriate methodology.
2. List the different methods for improving survey questions, along with the mistakes you do not want to make when writing questions.
3. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of including dont know and neutral responses among response choices and of using open-ended questions.
4. List the strengths and weaknesses of each mode of survey design, giving particular attention to response rates.
5. Discuss the key ethical issues in survey research.
The current discussion will help to work on objectives 1-5.
PROMPT:
I want you to think about how students may or may not think about or experience fear while on campus here at GSU. Then, write eight to 10 questions for a one-page questionnaire on fear of crime among students. Include some questions to measure characteristics (such as income or year in school) that might help to explain their attitudes. Make all but one of your questions closed ended.
After writing all of these questions on your own, place 3 or 4 of your best questions into discussion box of the course. Discuss with the class some of the problems in trying to measure difficult concepts such as fear? How about attitudes such as prejudice and intolerance?
For the response to another student, compare your questions to that of another student. Be specific and provide details and examples of what is similar and what is not. Discuss what you learned from this effort and if your questions could actually be used in a survey.
