Patient safety is a pressing healthcare concern in my profession, notably the high rate of falls among geriatric patients. In my employment, I constantly come across dementia patients who are at high risk of falling owing to disorientation, frailty, and an inability to follow safety procedures. Despite efforts like bed alarms, resource constraints, and poor communication among workers, there may be continued safety problems.

Transformational leadership can be applied to address this issue by promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. “Specifically, transformational leaders constantly regulate their emotions to display desirable positive emotions, stimulate enthusiasm, build confidence, and inspire their followers” (Qiao, Fan, Li, & Chen, 2025, p. 15). For example, as a leader, I could encourage open discussions about fall prevention strategies, support staff education, and advocate for better resources, such as additional safety equipment. Drawing from my experience, improving communication among nurses, assistants, and leadership can ensure quicker responses to patient needs and more consistent implementation of safety protocols. Additionally, empowering staff to share ideassuch as alternative interventions for confused patientscan lead to innovative solutions. By fostering teamwork, prioritizing patient-centered care, and advocating for system-level changes, transformational leadership can help reduce fall rates and improve overall patient outcomes in the geropsychiatric setting.
