Please write a 500+ word essay addressing the prompt below. This essay is in response to your reading of Kate Chopin’s short story, The Story of an Hour.

Purpose:
This assignment is designed to give me a sample of your writing at the start of the semester. I want to see how you approach reading, thinking, and writing, so I can better support your growth throughout the course.

Prompt (choose ONE):

  1. Chopins story explores themes of freedom, identity, and how people respond to sudden change. What message do you take away from the story, and how does it connect (or not connect) to your own experiences or observations about life?
  2. Consider Mrs. Mallards reaction to the news of her husbands death. Was her response shocking, understandable, or both? Explain your perspective and support it with examples from the story and/or your own reasoning.
