At this point, everyone should have chosen their topic and sacred text. If you have changed your mind, that’s just fine! Just let me know in this assignment and proceed with your new topic/text.
Hopefully you have all started looking for translations of your sacred text as well as a few academic sources that discuss your topic or text.
For this assignment, you will need to submit a list of 2 academic sources that that will help you to better understand your chosen topic in the religious tradition you have chosen, or the sacred text in general. For example, if you are writing about “women” in the Jewish Tanakh, you could find a book/article that discusses women in Judaism in general, women in the Tanakh, or just about the Tanakh in general. What is most important is finding a source (book, article, or website) that is reputable and reliable! There is so much misinformation on the internet, it is really important that we know how to search for information that is objective, academic, and trustworthy.
Your source can be:
1. A book about your topic, religion, or text. I recommend utilizing the Grossmont College Library to assist in your search.
You can also utilize the San Diego Library to look for books on your tradition:
2. You could use a news article that discusses your topic, religion, or sacred text (newspaper article, magazine article – found via print sources or online). Make sure that you are using a reputable news source! If you are not sure, do some research to see who publishes/writes the periodical you are looking at.
3. An educational website – this is where you need to be careful! In general, the best sites are going to have a .edu or .org website – other websites are acceptable, but you need to make sure that this is a RELIABLE source.
For your assignment, please list the 2 sources along with the two translations of your sacred text (including the link to the website if you found them online) formatted in correct APA or MLA format. For help with formatting, please utilize a website (such as ) that will format your sources for you!
For each of your two academic sources, please include a few sentences about 1) what you learned about your topic from the source and 2) why you think it is a reliable source.
