A note about AI:
AI may be used for this assignment but ONLY for approved purposes which include:
1. Helping to find multimedia on your topic
2. Understanding how to lay out a medical case study
YOU MAY NOT USE AI TO DEVELOP YOUR CASE STUDY OR WRITE YOUR REFLECTION. ANY
SOURCES MUST BE REFERENCED USING APA, AND ANY AI USE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH A
HISTORY OF PROMPTS. ANY UNAPPROVED USE OF AI WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO ON
THE ASSIGNMENT.
PART 1 (worth 20%) (DUE Week 8) For this assignment, your objective as the student will be to
design a case study around one of the important issues discussed in this course that you may
encounter as a paramedic, beyond the biomedicalized approach that is the primary focus of most
paramedic education.
Example topics:
Sexual assault
Trafficking
Elder abuse
Child abuse
Intimate partner violence
Multiple casualty incidents
Disaster response
Disability
Chronic pain
Homelessness
Substance use/addiction
Mental illness/crisis
Any other topic approved by instructor
1. Choose one of the issues covered in this class (we may or may not have covered it yet),
and research different multimedia that conveys the experiences of a person or people
with lived experience of this challenge. It may be a podcast, a video, a written story,
film, poetry, etc. This will be the starting point for creating your case study, write a
(maximum) 1 page summary of the source and what you learned from this media.
Some possible reflection topics:
How did learning from someone with direct experience enhance your knowledge as a future
paramedic and allow us to find a deeper understanding of this issue?
How do you think about this topic differently than you did prior?
HBCI 208 ASSIGNMENT: CASE STUDY, REFLECTION AND PRESENTATION Are there any ethical or other challenges associated with asking people to teach us about
their own personal trauma, and what are some ways to navigate this challenge?
How can the psychosocial needs of patients be best integrated into calls of varying degrees
of severity/acuity without sacrificing lifesaving or critical patient care?
How might a call involving this issue be complicated by other intersecting social
determinants, like age, gender, race, etc?
2. Develop a case study or scenario to provide an example of a call involving this issue,
providing a detailed history of the event, scene observations, safety concerns, initial
impressions. Leave time for learners to reflect, and possible questions.
The case study should unfold in a logical fashion, providing information as one might expect in
chronological fashion, what might you ask to find out incident history, patient history, events that
led up to it. What are good and bad questions to ask, what types of nonverbal communication are
important? Explain how you might address each area.
After explaining how you would manage the call, assess the situation, conclude your case study
with a plan for how to manage the situation. Basic patient care can be presented where relevant
(example what to do with patient injuries or clothing), but a detailed treatment plan is not required.
The focus should be on your immediate care for the patients physical and mental wellbeing,
getting information, and the safety of everyone.
3. PRESENTATIONS (worth 10%) (WEEK 11): Find a group of 2-3 and deliver your case
study to each other, ask questions, and let them navigate how they might manage the
situation. Provide them with feedback. Among your group, choose your favourite case
study, make improvements where required, and present it to the rest of the class.
Must include a visual element (whiteboard, slides, scenario actors etc).
Marking
A. Reflection (8 marks)-summary and critical thinking, thoughtful response, content and
writing, max 1 page
B. Case study (12 marks)-well designed, thoughtful, comprehensive, well laid out and clear,
inclusive of concepts, writing, spelling, grammar
C. Brief presentation to class (10 marks)-clear explanation of case study and learning points,
well laid out, logical, good communication
