Current Events in Public Health #4: Determinants

The “Why” Factors Related to Your Problem

Overview

The “Current Events in Public Health” assignments are designed to help integrate the concepts in each module and then relate them to public health current events. This week the topic is: Determinants

It helps to meet: Course Objective 10: Analyze current public health issues and describe how they affect societal well-being among specific populations of age, sex, ethnicity, minority, education and socioeconomic status.

This week, choose one of the articles below that interests you. You will read and summarize it. Then you explore the determinants to find a PRIMARY one. You will also research it’s social determinants.

Key Takeaways:

*Determinants are the factors that make it more likely you are at risk for a problem.

*Determinants include genetics, behavior, family/community, environment and social factors such as income and education.

*Social factors that are determinants are called Social Determinants of Health of SDoH for short.

Reading

Article

Or you can find another article on depression. Just make sure to include it in your work.

Research the determinants for depression

Assignment Steps

  1. Read the article.
  2. Do a short 1-2 sentence summary of the main topic.
  3. Research the determinants for depression and find one determinant for each category below.
  • Individual behavior
  • Policy: Find a policy related to depression. Name if it is federal or state or private
  • Biology and genetics

4.Now search: “(depression and social determinants (SDoH) ” and find facts for at least two Social Determinants. You do not need to name them all.

  • Socioeconomic status (SES)
  • Community/Home
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Racial Imbalance
  1. Summarize the data like I did in my example with headers like I have. Do not write it all in paragraphs. Every determinant shoudld have a fact with an in-text citation and reference.
  2. Then, create a simple determinant statement based on the article by filling out the below. (what was the determinant they studied?) then add an SDoH they found or choose one you found. This is practice for your project! It should look like this

Main Determinant: category: pick one of the yellow areas that the article focuses on Main SDoHs: pick 2 SDoH and how they relate to the problem in the article.

See my example!

  1. Personal reflection. Tell us how you feel about this or some personal experience with the issue.
  2. For the bibliography, cite the article you read (pretty easy since I have it right there!) and then you must have at least one and not more than two more sources.
  3. Your format must be exact to mine for grading.

Example

I read an article about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and its determinants. Sudden infant death is when a baby dies unexpectedly, often in the night or while sleeping.

Determinants:

BEHAVIOR: Sadly, putting to kids to sleep on their stomachs (or rolling to the stomach) was a large factor in SIDS. This position was 37x more likely to contribute to SIDS (1).

POLICY There are several policies enacted to address SIDS. The American Academy of Pediatrics, a private organization, has a policy for doctors to learn and teach the idea of putting babies “Back to Sleep” meaning on their backs. Also, there are standards for mattresses to be made more firm so babies do not suffocate in them.(4)

GENETICS: Some genetic disorders can increase the risk of SIDS such as polymorphism (1)

Social Determinants

SES: The SIDS rate was 3x the average rate in lower SES families (3)

EDUCATION: Lower socioeconomic (SES) and lower education status also increase SIDS as research shows both low education and low income increase SIDS (1,2).

I am glad I had the resources to help me lower the risk of SIDS for my babies. I do have a friend who lost a brother to SIDS, although they were not in a lower SES. I was a generation ago, however, when there was less education about “back to sleep” positioning. I was very nervous with blankets in the bad and when my children began to roll in fear they would be stuck on their tummies.

Determinant Statement: Behavior: Putting baby to sleep on the back SDoH: lower SES and education

Summary Tips

A summary is a short overview of the main idea. It is not listing facts, copying or saying a great deal. It is JUST the main idea of the article with a key point or two to support that idea. It has a clear overview sentence. Read my example to see.

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeUnderstanding & Application

0 ptsAccomplishedClearly shows understanding of key concepts from the unit by accurately applying them to a current event. Makes thoughtful and relevant connections between the event and public health ideas.0 ptsProgressingShows general understanding of concepts but connections to the current event are partial or surface-level. May need clearer explanation of how the event relates to the unit.

0 ptsRevisit & ReviseLacks clear connection to unit concepts or misinterprets the current event. May be off-topic or beyond the scope of the course.
