Ashoka the Great was one of the most powerful kings of ancient India. He was born in 304 BCE and was the ruler of the Maurya Empire.
He became king after his father, Bindusara. At first, Ashoka was a strong and sometimes cruel ruler. He fought many wars to expand his empire.
The most famous war was the Kalinga War. It was very destructive, and many people died. After seeing the suffering, Ashoka felt very sad and changed his life.He decided to follow peace and the teachings of Buddhism. He stopped fighting wars and started spreading love, kindness, and non-violence.
Ashoka built many roads, hospitals, and rest houses for people. He also sent messages of peace to other countries.
He is remembered as a great and kind king in Indian history.
