How Should Counselors Use Questions and Advice in Therapy?

Research on clinical interviewing shows that the kinds of questions counselors ask can shape how clients understand their experiences and how the therapy process develops. In Clinical Interviewing, Sommers-Flanagan and Sommers-Flanagan (2015) explain that questions are not neutral.

Based on this weeks reading, how can counselors balance the use of directive techniques (questions, suggestions, and advice) while still maintaining a collaborative, client-centered relationship? What strategies might help therapists avoid pushing clients toward their own interpretations or solutions too quickly?
