Outline Instructions

  • You will complete an Outline and a Project for each of the 3 Modules in this course.
  • Module Outlines are a separate grade from the Module Project.
  • You cannot write an “essay” for the Outline.
  • Outlines MUST be completed using the instructions below to be graded.

The goals of this Outline are:

  • to sharpen your skills of critical analysis of sources, organization, and argumentation.
  • to complete preliminary work to aid in the successful completion of your Module Project.
  • to complete the outline and submit it to the correct dropbox.

On this outline, you will:

  1. Choose a topic.
  2. Build an outline. Your outline MUST:
  3. Use Word:
  • Place the topic question you chose at the top as the heading.
  • All work must be submitted as a Word document. I cannot open Pages and generally do not accept PDFs. If you don’t have MS Word, .
  1. Use the Outline Framework and the Sample Assignment to guide your work
  2. Thesis:
  • Provide a thesis. NOTE: AI use is strictly prohibited in this course, even for grammar and spelling (see syllabus).
  1. Sub-Topics and Organization:
  • Identify multiple sub-topics of your body paragraphs and show an organizational framework.
  1. Meaningful Use of Assigned Sources:
  • Use at least 2 of the assigned sources for your topic question in the outline (assigned sources are listed with your topic question). NOTE: Use ONLY the sources assigned with your topic.
  • Site visit projects require some outside research, but sources are limited to those designated. All other projects use only sources listed with the topic and available in the course content.
  • Use” of a source in this class means incorporating direct quotes of no more than two sentences from the source. Quotes should provide unique, detailed information and ideas from the sources, not broad concepts that might be found in any source on the topic. Work that does not clearly make meaningful use of the assigned sources will have significant points deducted.
  • USE ONLY the documents provided in the course content. No outside sources, no research (unless permitted by the instructor)
  • NOTE: Although you only have to utilize 2 sources on the outline, your module project must make use of all required sources for your topic question.
  • No submission should be more than about 20% direct quotes.
  1. Details and Examples:
  • Include lots of specific examples and historical details to support your argument. Include dates, names, places, laws, people, stories, data, and numbers. Think like a lawyer in a courtroom drama. You need multiple forms of specific evidence to prove your case. The details build the argument.
  1. In-text Citations and Works Cited:
  • Include in-text citations anytime you use a source. This includes direct quotes and paraphrasing. Look at for what in-text citations should look like. Work that is not properly cited might not be graded.
  • Provide a Works Cited for the sources used in the outline. The sources cited in-text and in the Works Cited should match.
  1. Length Requirement:
  • Your work should contain 400 words of original writing, half of which must be complete sentences that demonstrate your thoughts, analysis, and ideas.
  1. Review Feedback:
  • After submission, you will receive feedback from your instructor about your work here in order to help you create your best project.
  • NOTE: You may decide, or your instructor may recommend, changes to the sources, organization, arguments or ideas before submission of your project. You will not be required to submit another outline to reflect these changes; simply apply the adjustments to the project.
