Evolution in Synth Pop and Industrial Metal

In two examples this week, Synth Pop and Industrial Metal, we can observe a clear evolution in genre. In one case, we see the move from a club based music to a more commercial approach (synthpop), while in the other we see the move towards darker subject matter and timbres (industrial). Of the examples given, which do hear more evidence of in contemporary music?

Example 1

I would say I hear more synth pop influences in contemporary music. Many artists use machines to create their “perfect” sound while recording, and use some sort of synthetic effects even on live instruments. Auto tune and sampling can make anyone a commercial success. The mentality of industrial’s “devour everything organic” can be seen as well, but its not seen in a dark or heavy mindset. I know a lot of the artists I’ve listened to will say Depends Mode had a big influence on their style.

Example 2

I hear more influence from synth pop in todays music. A lot of modern pop still uses electronic sounds, catchy melodies, and polished production that came from that style. You can hear it in big time artists who rely on synths and digital type beats. While industrial metal is still around, its darker and heavier sound isnt as common in mainstream music, so synth pops influence shows up more overall.

Example 3

The two genre evolutions youre comparingSynth Pop becoming more commercial and Industrial Metal becoming darker and more aggressiveactually represent two very different paths that music can take over time. One moves toward accessibility and mass appeal, while the other moves toward intensity, experimentation, and emotional extremity. When we look at contemporary music today, both are still present, but they function very differently in terms of visibility, influence, and audience reach.
