Gangster Rap: reality or stereotypes

Consider the two viewpoints: Gangster Rap reflected the reality of life in many inner cities, and makes that reality known to a wider populace, or that Gangster Rap reinforced stereotypes about young African-American men for the sake of selling records. Give your thoughts on these viewpoints (or perhaps a different viewpoint).

Example 1

In my opinion, I think both sides of gangster rap are true. A lot of gangster rap definitely tells a lot of their storytelling and what these certain types of artists were taught or went through throughout their lives. In my opinion, it definitely does give a voice to people who experience these types of things, and it is often ignored, but wrapping and telling us about it makes us understand how hard or how harsh the realities were growing up, and how they got brought into the gangster life. But also there is definitely some gangster rap that reinforces stereotypes or throughout time has reinforced stereotypes some pretty big artists I can think of could be Snoop Dogg or 50 Cent they have been criticized by an abundance amount of people for semi-promoting a certain different type of Lifestyle. in my opinion I think the music industry kind of surged or you could say Amplified the really bad extreme Parts because it sells music a lot better so it could be a lot more exaggerated.

Example 2

I think that Gangster Rap reflected the reality of life in many inner cities. The messaging in these songs were not meant to reinforce stereotypes in my opinion. In my opinion, these songs were meant to show the public just how brutal inner city life is, and about how in order to survive life and make money, you had to be a “gangster”. I think that the messaging in these songs show a different side of America, the reality that the public does not want to come to terms with. I think these songs put into spotlight that inner city life isn’t the safest, but instead of coming to terms with the reality, the public would rather reinforce racist stereotypes than try and fix the problems.

Example 3

Unfortunately, I believe both of these viewpoints have some validity or truth to them. It is evident by comparing local news at the time that the things they are rapping about do have relevance to current events. At the same time, seeing these rappers gain popularity and their lyrics about being delinquents and directly disobeying the law would appear cool to some younger teens. This is evident, especially as this is more prevalent today, considering rap groups in the Chicago area are directly connected to specific gangs. Young teens began to understand how doing these unlawful activities, as spoken about in songs, would gain them respect.
