Video of the Virgin of Jeanne dEvreux
Below is a link to a video on the Khan Academy website. In the video, Dr. Beth Harris and Dr. Steven Zucker analyze the sculpture of the Virgin of Jeanne dEvreux (Figure 18-18).
Sketch
Watch the video and then pause on a particular detail or view of the sculpture. Spend some time looking closely at your chosen detail/view and then make a sketch. You may sketch a specific aspect of the sculpture (e.g., the face of the Virgin Mary, part of the drapery, etc.) OR you may sketch the sculpture as a whole. Please set a timer and sketch for at least 5 minutes. Please also provide a time stamp for the exact moment when you hit pause (e.g., if you choose to sketch the lion at 3:28, please write 3:28 next to your sketch).
I will not grade this assignment based on the quality of the sketch; rather, I want to see that you are spending time looking closely at a work of art and studying its formal (visual) qualities texture, use of line, contrast, etc. You may use color if you like, but it is not necessary. Take a photo of your sketch and upload it here as an attachment.
Response
Answer the following two questions in your response:
- Describe your sketch. Which particular detail or view did you choose? What kinds of artistic choices did you make as you were drawing (e.g., did you focus on texture, color, contrast, shading, or some other visual quality)?
- How do Dr. Harris and Dr. Zucker describe the Virgin Mary and Christ child? In what ways does this depiction of the duo differ from earlier Gothic and Byzantine representations?
Please limit your response to no more than 300 words.
You do not need to conduct any outside research for this assignment.
