Essay Question 1: The title of this course is People, Organizations, and Systems. Over the course of the quarter, you read four required books. Choose one person from Entry Lessons who left the strongest impression on you. First, explain why this person made such an impression on you, linking it to experiences in your life. Then, using that persons experiences as an example, discuss how you understand the relationships among people, organizations, and systems. In this second part of the essay explain 1) how these three concepts can be defined, 2) how these different levels interact with one another, and 3) how these interactions shaped that persons life and experiences.

Essay Question 2: Andrea Elliotts Invisible Child and Jesse Katzs The Rent Collectors both use the detailed story of a single person or family to illuminate larger social issues. Using one example from each book, talk about what systems (i.e., child welfare, school systems, law and immigration enforcement, criminal justice etc.) play a role in the circumstances these individuals face. Next, using at least two key concepts from Isabel Wilkersons Caste, analyze the structural forces shaping this persons experience. Finally, how do these personal stories make visible the impact of these social issues on people and families that statistics or policy reports might miss?
