SPOTLIGHT DIVERSITY PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
The purpose of this assignment is to recognize the diverse needs of various student populations
although this assignment will focus on one spotlight diverse student who has definite needs in
speech and language acquisition or literacy development. Knowing the learner, the required
standards for the age group, the development stages, effective learning strategies, and reliable
assessments will bring each spotlight diverse student into focus. It will enable the candidate to
provide the best strategies to close the gaps in the literacy concepts which the student needs.
INSTRUCTIONS
The candidate will design a PowerPoint presentation with a minimum of 10 slides. The
PowerPoint presentation has 2 parts.
Part 1: The candidate will use words and pictures to describe a spotlight diverse student in
preK-2 who has gaps in speech/language acquisition or literacy development in other areas. This
diverse learners spotlight focus can be cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, academia-focused,
such as a specific learning disability, speech/language delays or other learning delays.
Part 2: The candidate will articulate a teaching philosophy of literacy by identifying key
background knowledge an educator needs to know about this student population, potential
strengths and weaknesses of this student population in the literacy areas, one intervention for
each of the literacy categories–reading, writing, and language, as well as accommodations in the
learning environment to meet the needs of this diverse group of learners with at least 3
references.

Slide 1: Title slide
Slide 2: Name the preK-2 student with a hypothetical first name and identify the
spotlight area.
Slide 3: Provide an overview of the developmental stage where this age student should be
in reading, writing, and language. Reference the ideas with class readings or other
research.
Slide 4: Create a bulleted list describing the specific learning disability, speech and
language delays or other learning delays using research-based information. The students
gaps in literacy development can be cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, or academia-
focused in nature. Research should support the ideas clearly. Using the hypothetical
spotlight diversity student, describe the 5 strengths and 5 weaknesses including the
effects of the spotlight diversity on literacy development in reading, writing, and
language. This slide is specific to research to identify struggles in this area. Any of the
readings from class can be used to create factual components.
Slide 5: Provide at least one intervention to improve reading. Include how growth is
measured in this area.

environment accommodations for reading. Include how growth is measured in this area.
Slide 7: Provide at least one intervention to improve language. Include a description of
environment accommodations for reading. Include how growth is measured in this area.
Slide 8: Design through an image and description a language and literacy-rich
environment that would be beneficial to aid in the success of literacy development for
this diverse population.
Slide 9: Conclude the presentation with overall philosophy of literacy in meeting the
needs of diverse populations and how SCRIP is integrated into the philosophy.
Slide 10: Reference slide. Remember if the reference is on the reference slide, it should
be cited in the presentation.
Content
Create 10 slides.
Demonstrate knowledge of speech/language acquisition and literacy development.
Apply the standards of learning for this age group.
Utilize evidence-based practices, which are supported with references.
Include at least 3 references.
General Requirements
Write with professional quality.
Use clear background with font which is easy to read.
Choose colors to complement the visual aspect of the presentation so that the presentation
could be read in the back of the room if presenting.
Avoid using paragraphs on the slide.
Bullet the ideas because it is easier to read, and make sure they parallel in structure.
Include images throughout the presentation to make it more engaging.
