Please respond to one of the following two prompts related to the readings and themes we have discussed in class thus far. You are not required to cite additional outside sources (though this is certainly welcome) but should display a clear and developed understanding of the class texts you examine and aim to mount an argument using textual evidence (quotes and citations) to support your view. Your paper should be 3-4 pages long, i.e. no less than two and no more than three full pages, double-spaced, in 12-point, Times New Roman font. This paper is worth 20 points, i.e. 20% of your final course grade. Good luck! prompt 2 Wage labor and pre-capitalist labor. Both Marx and Sider examine the different ways work was carried out in pre-capitalist and capitalist societies. Whereas Marx provides a general overview of four different modes of production (tribal, ancient, feudal and capitalist), Sider gives a fine-grained description of pre-capitalist and wage labor in the Newfoundland fishing economy. In your essay, please discuss the main ways in which wage labor processes differ from their pre-capitalist/pre-wage counterparts, making reference (where useful) to Marx and Sider’s texts. Then, I’d like you to examine the concept of “mode of production” which both authors deploy: in your view, to what extent is this concept useful for describing widely varying times and places, e.g. medieval Europe and early twentieth-century Newfoundland? To what extent is it too broad and imprecise?
